Gen Z office workers have been talking more and more online about the so-called “office bum” effect, with concerns that spending long hours sitting at a desk could be undoing the effort they put into staying fit. Research suggests office workers spend around 67% of their working day sitting at their desks, which has added to growing worries among younger workers about what all that time sitting down might be doing to their bodies. It is easy to assume an evening workout might balance things out, but fitness experts say it is what happens during the rest of the day that really matters. Sitting for hours at a time can leave people feeling tight, low in energy and mentally drained, even if they are still managing to train a few times a week. According to Leon Bolmeer, personal trainer and fitness expert at Geezers Boxing, it all comes down to how little people actually move during the day. “We are seeing more people who might train regularly but are still sitting for most of the day,” says Bolmeer. “That build-up of sitting is what leaves people feeling stiff and tired.” He says the good news is you do not need to completely change your routine to feel better.
